About Philip Olson, CFP®
I founded The Art of Finance LLC because I have a passion for helping artists and creatives succeed with money. I have called Austin, Texas home since 1997.
I attended the University of Texas in the Department of Theater & Dance. I also met Julia Lorenz while we worked backstage for a children’s dance show. Julia and I were married in 2007 while we were both still in college.
I spent several years as a ‘starving artist’ – waiting tables, parking cars, and making lattes. Eventually I became a theater instructor, where I fell in love with teaching and coaching my students. I led hundreds of theater productions at the local ZACH Theater, KidsActing, and more.
Eventually I left the professional artistic world when a recruiter for a financial services firm said “This industry needs more people like you – a people person”. I was Inspired to make a difference in a notoriously un-caring industry, and passed the Series 7 exam in 2011. I’ve been in love with financial planning and changing family’s financial lives ever since. In 2015 I went on to pass the Certified Financial Planner™ Board Exam and I now wear the ‘CFP®’ marks with pride. A CFP® with a Theater Degree! Who woulda thought it?
Julia and I live in north Austin with our rescue-pitbull Jazz. We are active dog-foster parents through Austin Pets Alive, housing shelter pets until they are adopted by their ‘forever families’. We are also actively engaged with the theater community; Julia being seen on stage with the Hidden Room and Penfold Theater companies; me directing for Penfold Theater and Soubrette Productions. Julia and I have a heart for serving the foster-children community of Austin through Partnerships for Children and Austin Stone Community Church.
