About Derek Merkler, CFP®

In 8 years of service as an Aviator to the United States Army, Derek held multiple platoon leader positions and Battalion S1 in the 1st Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Riley, KS which included a deployment to Tarin Kowt and Kandahar, Afghanistan. After the career course, Derek moved to the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade at Fort Hood where, following a stint in the Brigade S3, Derek took command of an attack recon troop consisting of AH-64 helicopters and Shadow UAVs.

18 months of command included fielding new versions of the Apache helicopter and Shadow UAV and leading the troop through a National Training Center rotation. He and his wife (also an Army officer) transitioned out of the Army in 2017 to start new careers.

As Derek began planning his transition after 8 years as an Army aviator, He didn’t intend to enter the financial industry even though he had personal experience and interest. But as he reflected on his own financial successes and mistakes, he realized that there aren’t many financial advisors who work primarily with veterans to put together comprehensive and holistic plans and build long-term wealth. Rather, companies large and small have advisors whose job is to sell their own products, often with commissions and sales targets. For them, a veteran can become merely a number.

Ultimately, Derek noticed that the financial services industry is often focused on helping people manage their money just before and during retirement. But few companies focus on helping people BUILD wealth.

The purpose of Derek’s business is to change that. No longer will you have access to financial advice only after you happen to have some money later on in life. Instead, Derek will help you build wealth over a long-term relationship, first establishing a proper financial foundation and then investing for your goals.
