Matthew Crum, CFP®

About Matthew Crum, CFP®

I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional and the founder of True North Financial Services. My career started 10 years ago after graduating with a degree in Finance and Economics from the University of Delaware. Since then, the diverse experience I’ve gained working with clients and financial advisors has been invaluable, but it’s also given me a unique prospective on where there’s still a great deal of opportunity to improve.

My moment of clarity came while working for an institutional wealth management firm in Connecticut. I notice that, although clients were typically looking for an advisor to help them better understand and manage their financial lives, most advisors I encountered were primarily focused on managing investments. Many offered financial planning as a free add-on service, but because the advisors were paid based solely on the value of client’s investments, their focus remained on managing their client’s portfolios. Despite this misalignment of priorities, I found that many clients continued to work with investment-focused advisors simply because they saw no other option.

I founded True North Financial Services to change that very dynamic and offer people a different kind of relationship with their advisor. To better align our focus with the kind of help clients are seeking, True North instead charges a flat monthly fee for on-going financial planning and advice. Investment management and other services are also provided, but they are just one component of the on-going financial planning we provide to our clients.
This seemingly small change allows a shift in overall focus from simply managing investments to helping our clients make better-informed financial decisions.

Although I work with many different kinds of investors, I predominantly work with young professionals and women in transition because of my own personal and professional experiences. Most importantly, I’ve found that both groups are searching for, and benefit most from, working with an advisor focused on more than just investments.

At True North, our goal is to help our clients bring clarity to their vision of success and help map their unique path to achieve it. What does your vision of success look like?

Allow us to help guide you on your life’s journey.

Why Financial Planning?
To empower you to make confident financial decisions so you can focus on what matters most to you. It is all about quality over quantity, and if I can solve all of the uncertainties surrounding your financial life – you will be able to be even more focused on living the life you want to live!
This is why we, at HIGHLAND Financial Advisors, LLC, started Upswing Advisor – to provide a platform for young professionals, new families, and young entrepreneurs to have access to comprehensive financial advice.

Professional Background
During my junior year at Montclair State University, I reluctantly attended a career fair held on campus not expecting to find the company I would call home, HIGHLAND Financial Advisors. As a Finance and Management undergrad, I was never really introduced to the financial planning field until my internship with HIGHLAND which was a revelatory experience. From that internship, I knew financial planning was my calling.
After graduation, I began working full-time for HIGHLAND as a Paraplanner and immediately enrolled in the CFP® program at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I passed my CFP® exam in the summer of 2016. Fast forward a couple years, I am currently working as a Financial Planner for Highland and am leading the team at Upswing Advisor.
As a millennial myself, I am passionate about educating other young professionals, so they are armed with an arsenal of knowledge across the investment and financial planning world. I enjoy navigating employer benefits, exploring tangible and aspirational goals, and creating actionable recommendations to help achieve what matters most to you. Success starts with creating a strong foundation with the basics and methodically working through life changing events.

Personal Background
I live in Essex County with my husband, Dorian, who is a mechanical engineer. We love to travel as much as possible domestically and abroad. We enjoy staying active throughout the year and being outdoors as much as possible. We love to hike, camp, and snowboard; watch out for us on the mountain though!
One day in the near future, we are hoping to expand our family with a rescued furry friend.

About Thomas J. Duffy, CFP®, MBA, CRPC

I am the founder and principal advisor dedicated to working with new widows/widowers who are looking to:

• understand & organize their new financial lives;
• evaluate & prioritize financial decisions;
• establish a financial life plan to live forward without fear.

I do not work for an insurance company or investment firm. It’s just me and you. In fact I will put in writing that I am a fiduciary and will put your interests first.

I can differentiate my firm vs most others in that I charge on a fixed-fee basis for financial planning.

A one-time financial plan costs $5,900. I do not require you to hire me to manage investments for us to work together.

For ongoing financial planning, fees begin at $8,000 and range upward to a maximum (for most situations) of $20,000. Your net worth is our proxy for complexity so for those with net worth exceeding $6 million your fee may be higher.

Although my physical location is near the beach in Eastern Monmouth county, New Jersey I can work remotely with clients regardless of location.

About Vid Ponnapalli, CFP®, MS

My name is Vid Ponnapalli. I am the owner of Unique Financial Advisors & Tax Consultants. I provide customized Financial coaching, Investment Management, and Tax services for Busy, Mid-career Professionals. Here is my story:

Flashback: I was 38. My wife and I were busy with our careers and three children. Our financial accounts were scattered. We were paying a lot in income taxes. We had conflicting financial goals: Spend on the car we like, spend on family vacations, save for our dream home, save for our kids’ education or save for retirement. We needed help organizing our financial life; We needed financial advice, so we could achieve our goals! We looked around but could not find an unbiased financial advisor who would put our interest before his/hers.

Fast forward: Five years later, I approached a financial advisor for help with Investment Management. His firm insisted that I need a minimum of $1million to become a client. I was not ready to commit that much money to start a new advisory relationship. Again, I could not find the financial advisor I was looking for!

That is when I realized that busy, mid-career professionals are under-served by traditional financial planning methods. I wanted to contribute and change this paradigm. The result: I launched Unique Financial Advisors in 2014 with a commitment to provide fee-only financial advice with no asset or income minimums.

If this fits your vision, too, please visit my website and my blog to learn more.

On a personal note – my beautiful wife, Maha and I live in Holmdel, New Jersey. Our three young boys are on their path to settling down in life. When I am not working, I enjoy hiking, skiing, and spending time with family.

About Andrew Novick, CFP®, JD

I founded The Investment Connection in 2014 in order to provide customized financial planning and investment management services to individuals and families regardless of their net worth, income, or investable assets. My focus is on helping young, growing families and others seeking the right financial path to meet their specific goals.

I have worked with college graduates, newlyweds, first-time parents, parents with school-age children, business owners, corporate executives, professionals, as well as divorcees, retirees, and widows. I care about my clients and try to give them the best planning and investment advice possible, along with a high quality experience.

While many firms say they offer customized services, what they actually provide are one-size fits all model portfolios or financial plans from pre-packaged software. My services are truly customized to my clients’ needs. This can include incorporating socially responsible investments or alternatives into client portfolios. Performance of your accounts is also a top priority, and having a strong relationship is critically important to achieving that goal.  Building this relationship depends on the give and take of conversation and communication. I am an advisor who listens, solicits your input, shares my thinking, and tests ideas against what you are willing and able to do, so we can develop a lasting and beneficial relationship. If you are too busy with your job, your children, or other responsibilities to address your finances or manage your portfolio, give me a call!

I am a Certified Financial Planner™ professional with a law degree and have been providing fee-only investment management and financial planning services for more than 20 years. Over the years, I’ve been named a NJ Five Star Wealth Manager (Five Star Professional), Best Financial Advisor for Doctors (Medical Economics), and Best Financial Advisor for Dentists (Dental Practice). I am a member of the American Bar Association and long-standing board member of my local Estate Planning Council.  Importantly, I am a member of National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), the country’s leading professional association of Fee-Only financial advisors, and am proud to be one of 30 founding members of the XY Planning Network.

My commitment to you means more than any certificate on a wall. I give my clients award-winning financial service through a personal, hands-on approach.
