About Wakefield Hare, CFP®

Greater Than Financial is a financial planning and investment management firm specializing in planning for the busy families of Kansas City’s Northland and across the United States. We help those families who need extra expertise to find the information necessary to make confident financial decisions. We accomplish this by using the latest financial planning applications and by developing a customized communication schedule for every family we serve.

Our dedication to planning comes from one simple thought: people have access to all they need for a full life, yet most feel like something’s missing.

So much of our lives are but a shadow of what they could be because of waste. The effective application of financial principles can fix that.

To us, finance is about discovering the best and highest use for all that we have, including our money, our skills, our time, and our energy. Finance, done right, equals more life. Life that is greater than what we are currently living.

Those thoughts spurred Wakefield to create Greater Than Financial and give the company its mission: Giving accurate and timely information to make it simpler for families to live fully.

With over 12 years of investment management and financial planning experience, and over 15 years working with teenagers and their parents through Young Life, Wakefield has gained the ability to layer technical planning expertise on top of insightful communication to be able to discover what a family really needs to make progress.

That’s why Greater Than Financial focuses on serving Kansas City Northland families under 50. These people’s schedules are so full, it becomes normal to not slow down long enough to remember the reason we’re all running so fast in the first place.

These families are coming into their peak earning years but still have time for career transition if it makes sense. These families are pushing to make sure their kids are on track to become fulfilled, productive adults. These families are beginning to confront the realities of life after the kids get out of high school, including the complexities of paying for college and the expectation of an empty nest.

If you’re that family and want a consistent planning process to help you make the best decisions possible, then you are a Greater Than family.

About Kyle Hill, CFP®

Growing up I had always dreamed of owning my own business. I was first inspired by my grandparents who owned an insurance business in a small Kansas town.

I grew up in Manhattan, Kansas and attended Kansas State University where I studied Business Administration and Leadership Studies. Upon graduation, I moved to Kansas City and married my college sweetheart. I decided to enter the banking industry because I wanted to help people achieve financial life milestones. The bank I worked at was located in a disadvantaged neighborhood with high rates of poverty. It was this job that reinforced lessons I had been taught early in life on empathy, compassion, and the importance of financial independence.

After gaining new perspectives in banking, I joined a wealth management firm where I spent six years in the investment world. It was at this time that my wife and I went through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, a class that forever changed my perspective on personal finance and altered my life trajectory. I went on to earn a Master of Science in Finance and the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP®) certification.

When completing my studies I remember thinking to myself, “Why isn’t anyone working with my generation?”. I was routinely told that it could not be done because young people lacked the amount of investable assets needed to be desirable clients. In other words, most financial advisors considered working with young people a waste of their time. This narrative continued to weigh on my mind until I discovered XY Planning Network (XYPN), a network for financial planners catering to younger clients in an objective, fee-only capacity. I have since become a member of XYPN to define my vision of helping younger generations develop a plan to succeed financially so that they may live a great life and do good in the world.

Monthly Fee: $75+/mo
Quarterly Fee: $225+/qtr
Flat Fee: $300+/One Time Engagement
AUM: 0.40% Max ($150 min/annual)
I continue to call Kansas City home with my wife, our two young sons, and our two dogs. When I am not drawing up financial plans for clients, I enjoy attempting to keep up with my toddlers, cheering on the K-State Wildcats, the Kansas City Royals, and the Kansas City Chiefs, and participating in my fantasy football leagues (This year is the year!).

About Richard C. Salmen, CFP®, CFA, EA

An experienced fee-only financial planner and servant leader, I guide a team that helps hundreds of families across the United States fulfill their dream of reaching financial independence. Our focus on middle and upper-middle class clients allows us to provide holistic, fiduciary advice on a fee-only basis to those who previously did not realize such a service existed for them. By leading our clients through understandable systems and processes we coach them to use money more effectively to realize a satisfying and fulfilling life. We strive to be a vital resource providing clarity and focus in our clients’ complex financial lives.

My passion for leadership led to a natural transition to serving the financial planning profession. During my tenure on the Financial Planning Association (FPA) national board I served as national President in 2009. The financial crisis that emerged during my service set the stage for the next stage of my volunteer leadership journey. FPA, NAPFA and the CFP Board started formally working together to advance the financial planning profession. The Financial Planning Coalition that resulted has been a powerful voice for protecting the public.

I served as the 2018 Chair of the CFP® Board national board of directors. Our mission to benefit the public by granting the CFP® certification and upholding it as the recognized standard of excellence for competent and ethical financial planning resonated deeply with me.

Since I live our message of Planning For Some Serious Freedom, I spend a few days per month enjoying my side gig which is flying Cessna Citation Jets as a professional pilot. Some of my free time is spent at my vacation home on the Missouri River in northeast Nebraska water skiing with my children. And, if you want to talk sports cars and/or motorcycles feel free to reach out.

About David Zaegel, CFP®, CPA

Hi, I’m Dave Zaegel. I started CWOs for Hire to help remove financial stress from clients’ lives. Having been in a high-stress corporate job while also starting a family, I understand the challenges that my clients face on a daily basis because I experienced them first hand. With my accounting background, I also work with many small business owners to help them understand how their business and personal finances connect, and how they can get the most out of both.

I’ve been told many times that how I help clients “just doesn’t exist anywhere else”. While that’s not entirely true (just look at this XY Planning Network!!), I do have a unique skill set between my accounting, tax and financial planning experience, with the added gifts of listening and counseling that I’ve learned from numerous mentors throughout my life.

When I’m not working, I have fun with my wife and three children, and all my friends and other family. As a family we enjoy sports, music and playing card / board games, among many other activities.

Tyler Landes, CFP®, AIF®

About Tyler Landes, CFP®, AIF®

I’m Tyler Landes, a financial planner who loves to help young professionals and their families. Our generation is very aware that we need to plan and make smart financial decisions early and often. We’ve been taught money basics along the way, but at a certain point we all need guidance. I founded Tandem Financial Guidance to make financial advice accessible to everyone because we all dream big, and we don’t have to do it alone.

There are many types of financial advisor. I’m not the kind you’ll find playing golf at the country club or charting the markets behind a mahogany desk. I’m the planner you should meet with to uncover what your goals are in the first place. When you get the new job with the new benefits package, together we’ll pick the options that are right for you. When you meet “the one,” we’ll make sure your money habits are aligned and work for you both. And when you call to say you’re expecting another child, we’ll adjust and tweak and craft new goals all together.

PERSONAL:

I live in Kansas City, Missouri with my wife and two young daughters. Molly is an accountant, so you’d think our financial life would be neat and tidy. In reality, like many couples we each handle spending decisions differently. Luckily we both value living within our means and making progress toward our future goals. In our spare time we enjoy live music, trying new restaurants, and traveling to new ballparks. I also dabble in homebrewing and am an aspiring beer snob.
