Jay Karamourtopoulos, CFP®

About Jay Karamourtopoulos, CFP®

My name is Jay. I’m originally from Massachusetts and live in the North End of Boston.

Prior to starting Hereford Financial I worked for an investment management company servicing their private clients, a team of financial planners helping put together financial plans, and for two early stage FinTech companies (one in Boston and one in NYC.)

Like many of my peers, I set out to join the tech industry to find more fulfilling work that aligned with my values and provided me with an opportunity to grow and enhance my career through opportunities not easily found at more established firms. I’ve seen first hand the dedication, passion, time and effort that goes into working for a tech company and the fulfillment that comes from bringing a new product or service into the world. However, it leaves little time to understand your RSUs, ISOs, NSOs, ESPPs and how they fit into and affect your financial plan and goals.

My time in the tech space made me realize how impactful and beneficial equity compensation can be, but also how lack of education can cause confusion and missed opportunities, especially for millennials who haven’t accumulated the necessary assets to work with a traditional financial planner.

I created Hereford Financial to help clients in their 30’s and 40’s create clarity around their equity compensation and use it to plan for a secure future while enjoying their life today. There are no asset minimums, which allows me to work with and help younger clients whose financial situations are just as, if not more complicated than those traditionally served by the industry.

Our comprehensive financial planning process will help you create, grow and keep the wealth you have worked so hard for and allow you to spend more time doing the things that are important to you. We’ll ensure that your money is being leveraged as a tool to do more of what you love.

Max Pashman, CFP®

About Max Pashman, CFP®

Would you ever go to a doctor and be OK if their recommendation was incentivized by the size of their check? Or by what’s actually going to solve your health problem? As obvious as this might sound, it’s not so obvious in the financial industry. As an independent fee-only company, Pashman Financial has a fiduciary obligation to always put your best interest first.

The reality is the financial industry has gotten a bad rep after the amount of distrust it has laid on it’s customers. Your priorities should be addressed by what’s best for your needs versus focusing on how large someone can cash from you. Unfortunately, the traditional business model in the financial industry has not been set up as such. Versus jumping right into a traditional advisor role, Max decided to first invest his time learning more about the industry. He did so by working for a number of successful teams that guided him towards the appropriate steps towards understanding the financial planning process over time. During his training, he assisted hundreds of households to get them closer towards their financial goals and also obtained his Series 7, Series 66, and life + health license.

By the time he gained the appropriate knowledge, he started building his own book of business and established a successful online network to push financial education to his followers. While advising clients at One Wealth Management, Max had begun to understand how he truly wanted to create the best financial planning for his clients. He realized in order to better serve his existing and upcoming clients, he had to transform his business into a truly fiduciary model. After obtaining his CFP designation, he founded Pashman Financial as a fee-only company built on that promise.

Today, Max currently assists sales professionals with organizing their paychecks. He focuses on helping sales professionals with financial planning surrounding their commission checks, exploring their individual options, utilizing their company benefits, and understanding their stock options. You worked hard for your hard-earned dollars. Now make them work even harder for you.

T.J. van Gerven, CFP®

About T.J. van Gerven, CFP®

Hi, my name is Theodore van Gerven, but you can call me TJ!

I’m the founder of Modern Wealth Builders, LLC, an independent fee-only financial planning practice located in the Greater Boston area.

At MWB, I help people identify what truly matters to them and show them how to use their money to create the life they want.

While I meet with clients in-person when convenient (and when not in a pandemic), I primarily meet with clients virtually.

Meaning, you don’t have to be located in Massachusetts to work with me.

I started MWB, so I could remove the complexity behind financial planning and work with hard-working, like-minded professionals.

Outside of helping clients perfect their financial plan, I can be found traveling, playing spike ball on South Beach (Martha’s Vineyard), or crafting a finance friendly meme. 🙂

Review our case studies at modernwealthbuilders.com if you’re interested in getting an in-depth description of the types of clients we do our best work for.

Tony Matheson, CFP®

About Tony Matheson, CFP®

Tony founded Matheson Financial Partners in 2017 after selling investment solutions to financial advisors for over 20 years. Prior to founding MFP, Tony was head of sales with some of the largest asset management firms in the country, including Principal Financial. His first sales territory took him to New York for 4 years until he returned home to lead the sales division for the San Francisco Bay Area region.

“One of the pitfalls I’ve seen my colleagues face is grinding so hard to hit their sales and income goals that they neglect to plan how to manage their incoming assets. Income is not the same as wealth. I work closely with my clients developing systems to help them efficiently retain their assets and accumulate wealth, allowing them to put their focus and energy into what’s important to them.” – Tony Matheson

His vision was to design an independent fee-only firm to deliver comprehensive financial planning as a fiduciary, specializing in solving the challenges that many sales professionals face.

Over his career, Tony has helped advisors identify solutions and implement investment strategies for their clients. He has been a featured speaker at various industry events on topics including economic forecasts, optimizing social security payments, and college planning.

Tony is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER TM and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Theological Studies from Bethany University in Santa Cruz, CA. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and currently lives in Walnut Creek, CA with his wife Barbara and their 2 kids. When he’s not working, you’ll probably find him on his Peloton bike or a softball diamond. He has completed marathons from SF to NYC and has volunteered with various organizations including Financial Planning for Cancer.

Justin Castelli, CFP®

About Justin Castelli, CFP®

My name is Justin Castelli, and I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional. I’m also the founder of RLS Wealth Management, which was started in 2015 with the goal of providing financial planning for not only my Baby Boomer clients but also my peers. Rather than only working with clients on an assets under management (AUM) basis, I work with young professionals and entrepreneurs through a monthly subscription model.

Prior to my career as a financial advisor, I attended Franklin College, where I played basketball for four years. I graduated in the spring of 2004 with a degree in Economics, and then set out to help people reach their financial goals. As many do, I began my career as a financial advisor with a large insurance company, and eventually left to work for an even larger insurer helping teachers with their retirement plans. It was during this time I obtained my CFP®; I also learned a lot about what is wrong with the financial services industry. I left the corporate financial planning world after feeling constrained by its limitations, and I joined a small independent firm in Indianapolis. After two years of turning great people away due to firm asset requirements, I started RLS Wealth Management, and I wish I would have done it sooner!

I am also the author of the blog “All About Your Benjamins”, where I write about a variety of financial topics. My hope for my blog is to educate my readers and to get them to think.

On a personal note, I have been married to my wife Angela since 2006, and we have three young boys, Roman, Leo and Silas. We play a lot of basketball, naturally as Hoosiers, at our house, but since we’ve had the boys, I’ve had to sharpen my football, soccer and baseball skills. We are also a CrossFit family, and I am the stereotypical CrossFitter who will talk all day about workouts–you’ve been warned. During the few quiet moments at home, I can be found reading, listening to music, or helping my wife with her small business, an all-boys boutique called Roman and Leo.
