About Elliott Appel, CFP®, CLU®, RLP®

Having spent the first decade of my career with a large wealth management firm in Seattle, I launched Kindness Financial Planning in 2021 to work with fewer clients and focus on widows, widowers, caregivers, and families affected by major health events.

Their stories resonate with me because my dad was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer on July 18, 2016. He has had brain radiation, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. We have navigated oncologists, surgeons, palliative care doctors, neurologists, endocrinologists, pain clinics, psychiatrists, social workers, pain clinics, nutritionists, and more.

Since then, I’ve been drawn to people going through similar situations. I enjoy our conversations, hearing what is important, and helping them navigate the uncertainty life throws at them.

Through these conversations, I have learned that when faced with loss and grief, brain fog usually takes over. What was once easy becomes challenging. Sometimes, only one person was involved in the financial decisions and the survivor needs another layer of support.

I meet people where they are, listen, and organize what needs to be done to build financial security. I help people make sense of what is urgent and what can wait. Together, we’ll do tax planning, review estate plans, build customized investment portfolios to create the income they need, and more. Then, I am with them every step of the way.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Seattle University. I hold the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation, Chartered Life Underwriter® designation, and I am a Registered Life Planner®.

Outside of work, you can find me playing tennis, running with my fiancée, biking, hiking, attempting to play the guitar, or cooking.

About Anne Marie Webster, CFP®

Well, hello there! I became an advisor in March of 2009 when the market was at its lowest in the financial crisis–and about to make a stunning rebound. (The clients I convinced to start investing in 2009 think I’m a genius now.) I graduated from Salem College in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications which was a helpful degree to pursue considering what I do now. (Good job, 22-year-old self!) About ten years into my career as an advisor I earned the CFP® designation- an accomplishment of which I am very proud. I run my life on an excel spreadsheet and love nerding out to numbers, but my passion for this career lies in the relational and very human side of personal finance.

I’ve worked in both privately held and publicly traded financial firms large and small, but nothing compares to the joy of founding my own financial firm working with the clients of my choice. I live in Lewisville with my husband, three kiddos, two dogs, and a recording studio. We play and make a lot of music and are living proof that creatives can be great with money.

About Melissa Walsh, CFP®, CFA, AIF

Hello there, I’m Melissa!

My mission in everything I do is to make a positive difference in the lives of the people I serve. I aim to enthusiastically help my clients to achieve their goals and to be a trusted partner every step of the way.

I see each day as a new opportunity to enhance the lives of those I serve- my clients, my family, and my community. This intrinsic feel for what’s truly important in life helps to fuel my drive for the work I do both here at Clarity Financial Design and beyond.

I am most satisfied in life by finding injustices and righting them. I think this is why a career in finance initially appealed to me; the industry has widespread and systemic problems related to conflicts of interest, gender inequality, and lack of transparency. I’ve made a commitment to improving our industry as well as our clients’ individual lives by providing fiduciary, fee-only, transparent advice.

Today, my path is working with my clients to help them find financial clarity. I seek to listen, understand, and thoughtfully consider each client’s unique story in order to help her plan for the next step on her path. My goal is to build life-long relationships with my clients as their trusted financial partner.

When I’m not at work, I enjoy volunteering in my community. I’ve made a commitment to spend 10% of my time supporting organizations that are meaningfully impacting the well-being of local girls, women, and families.

I am married to my husband, Steve, and am the mother of two smart, brave, and determined daughters. Willow is 4 and enjoys swimming, dancing, and practicing her detective skills. Lila is 3 and loves to sing, dance, and pretend to be a teacher. My hobbies are running, cooking, and reading, and I pursue these hobbies during this season of life by running after my daughters, cooking for my family and friends, and reading up on all things financial. On a typical Saturday, you’ll find me out at the beach, farmer’s market, or cheering on the Michigan Wolverines (Go Blue!).

I look forward to learning your story and helping you plan for your next step.

Bob Shopes, CFP®

About Bob Shopes, CFP®

I have an unusual background for a financial advisor. I have a Ph.D in Biophysics and founded several biotech companies. After one company went public, leaving me financially secure, I retired early to fullfill my dream to be a ski bum. Early retirement was not for me but I discovered while volunteering that I loved talking to people about their financial lives. Who knew?

I joined a small brokerage, got properly licensed, started learning the business and earned my CFP. After six years I left to start my own registered investment advisor firm.

Favrile Financial was founded on the fiduciary principle to always put the clients interest first. We are strictly fee only and will not accept commissions from any third party. The client deserves our undivided loyalty as a fiduciary. Secondly, we do not charge fees on the basis of your “assets under management”. This allows us to give our best advice without concern over where your assets are located. We charge a flat annual fee and that is all. We have no minimum asset or age qualifications but clients are typically 60+, near, or in, retirement and have a net worth of more than $1MM.
